Vietnamese President holds talks with Canadian Prime Minister

Party General Secretary and President To Lam held talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa on September 24 during his State visit to Canada, with the two sides discussing bilateral relations and ways to further strengthen cooperation. During the meeting, both leaders engaged in a constructive exchange of views on the current state of bilateral relations and concrete measures to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries. They reaffirmed the importance of deepening collaboration across various sectors, including economy, trade, investment, and cultural exchange. Vietnam is currently prioritizing economic growth under its one-party system, actively pursuing a strategy to reduce economic dependence on China and diversify its supply chains by strengthening ties with Western countries. This meeting with Canada is seen as part of this broader foreign relations strategy. Canada is a key partner for Vietnam, and both nations have expressed eagerness to enhance economic ties, including aiming for the early ratification of the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Vietnam seeks to attract Canadian investment and expand its exports to the Canadian market, with this meeting expected to contribute to these goals.
