Congress to Tackle Fate of Nov. 2 BSKE as Session Resumes

Lawmakers are expected to determine on Monday whether efforts to postpone the November 2 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will move forward as Congress resumes session, according to Negros Occidental 3rd District Rep. Javier Miguel “Javi” Benitez. Benitez stated that House leaders have been asking for the sentiments of the members, indicating that the fate of the elections could be decided when Congress reconvenes. He suggested that a significant number of lawmakers might favor postponement, arguing that it could alleviate the government's fiscal burden and prevent potential disruptions in the electoral process. The BSKE are held every two years to elect local village officials and youth representatives. Discussions about postponing these elections have occurred in the past, often centering on the readiness of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the government's financial situation, and political stability. These deliberations are also drawing attention to potential political motivations regarding the extension of incumbent officials' terms and public concern over the substantial budget allocated for the elections. The government might propose reallocating funds saved from a postponement to infrastructure projects or social welfare programs.
