Quezon City Bolsters UNESCO Commitments with New Multisectoral Body

MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City is bolstering its efforts to fulfill its commitments with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) by establishing a multisectoral body to coordinate its initiatives. Mayor Joy Belmonte issued an executive order creating the Quezon City Learning, Information and Culture Committee. The committee will be primarily responsible for coordinating the city's efforts as a UNESCO Creative City of Film, a UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Pilot City, and a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. "These recognitions are more than international distinctions. They represent our commitment to empowering every QCitizen through education, culture and access to reliable information," Belmonte stated. She added, "By bringing together our departments and partners under one coordinating body, we can better deliver programs that help our communities become more informed, engaged and resilient." The mayor will chair the committee, with the Education Affairs Unit serving as the secretariat. Members will include representatives from key city departments, the Schools Division Office, Quezon City University, the Quezon City Public Library, and other partner institutions. Beyond developing and implementing action plans to advance the city's UNESCO commitments, the committee is also tasked with strengthening partnerships, monitoring program implementation, and leading public awareness campaigns on education, media and information literacy, lifelong learning, and culture.
