The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) expressed strong concern on July 21, stating that 144 people are dead or missing following a shipwreck off the coast of Mauritania last week. UNHCR, national authorities, and humanitarian partners were present during the rescue operations. In addition to those dead or missing, 387 people were rescued. The spokesperson noted that the sea route connecting West Africa to Spain's Canary Islands is one of the most dangerous migration routes for refugees and migrants attempting to reach Europe.
