The record-breaking river water rising in Myitkyina of Kachin State in 2024 resulted 40 percent of city’s area flooding. To prevent the flood risk within the state, Kachin State government is implementing flood preventive measures annually by constructing water retaining walls, river embankments and sluice gates within 18 nautical miles from Ayeyawady River. On July 18th, Kachin State Chief Minister U Khat Htein Nan and concerned officials conducted field inspection on rising water level and preservation works of retaining walls. The Chief Minister and party inspected the completion of 500 ft long revetment from Su Taung Pyae pagoda port in Thida ward to Inn Jang Kha Creek in Sitapu Ward, completion of 8 ft wide and 12 ft long Inn Jang Kha sluice gate constructed by Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department in 2025-2026 fiscal year and construction of retaining wall and sluice gate pier and other work processes implemented in 2026-2027 fiscal year. At the Lae Kone-Kyat Paung Chang Ward in Myitkyina Township, the Chief Minister and party inspected flood prevention measures conducted by the Department of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems and gave necessary instructions.
