Canadian Chamber of Commerce Shows Strong Interest in Expanding Environmental Cooperation in Cambodia

Minister of Environment, H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, met with a delegation from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CanCam Cambodia), led by its President, Ms. Yein Ngo. The Canadian side expressed strong interest in expanding cooperation in Cambodia's environmental sector. During the meeting held at the Ministry of Environment on July 29, 2026, Ms. Yein Ngo highly commended Cambodia's environmental management, particularly its efforts to make the country clean, green, and environmentally sound. She added that the Canadian delegation is highly interested in Cambodia's significant potential in the environmental sector and intends to contribute further to the country's development in line with the Cambodian government's green policies and strategies. H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth expressed support and encouraged Canadian and other international investors to explore opportunities for direct investment in Cambodia to promote sustainable development. He stated that the implementation of the environmental sector's strategy focusing on 'Clean, Green, Sustainable' has received public support, with the plastic reduction campaign seeing commitments from over 14 million citizens, especially students nationwide. The Minister elaborated on the concept of cleanliness, including inner cleanliness—cultivating love and responsibility for the environment from the heart—and external cleanliness, where the Ministry of Environment promotes participation in cleaning activities along roads, in public places, temples, and schools to maintain aesthetics. Regarding international cleanliness, Cambodia actively participates in various international agreements, such as the Agreement on Climate Change, and has received high international praise for its efforts in addressing global environmental issues, including reducing pollution, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, restoring forests, and planting millions of trees annually to increase forest cover and achieve the goal of becoming a carbon-neutral country by 2050. He further added that alongside the tree-planting policy, the Ministry of Environment is involved in developing local communities and improving livelihoods through the development of green recreational areas. The ministry collaborates with stakeholders, environmental enthusiasts, and activists to protect and conserve natural resources and to further strengthen the effective enforcement of laws against forest crimes.
