UN Adopts Declaration on Rising Sea Levels, Cambodia Calls for Stronger Support

NEW YORK, Sept 25, 2026 (KPT) — The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a declaration urging stronger international action to confront the growing threats posed by rising sea levels, with Cambodia pressing for greater support for vulnerable nations. The declaration was adopted on September 24 during a high‑level meeting at UN Headquarters in New York. Cambodia’s Permanent Secretary of State for the Environment, San Vannthy, told delegates that countries must strengthen the protection and restoration of mangrove forests and coastal wetlands, while integrating sea‑level‑rise risks into development planning and infrastructure investment. He also called for developing countries to gain wider access to financing and technical assistance. The text recognises that rising seas are already having tangible impacts and pose serious risks to small island states, least developed countries and coastal communities. It identifies four areas for international action: strengthening scientific research and data‑sharing; boosting adaptation and resilience measures; protecting ecosystems, livelihoods and heritage; and clarifying legal issues under international law, including maritime zones. Officials said the adoption reflects growing recognition that sea‑level rise is a global challenge linked to climate change, disaster preparedness and the protection of vulnerable communities. Cambodia’s intervention underscored the urgency of coordinated action and the need for inclusive support to ensure countries can adapt and safeguard their populations.
