Cambodia Strengthens Laws and Awareness Campaigns Against Online Human Trafficking

Kandal Province, Cambodia, has organized a legal awareness forum aimed at strengthening understanding and public participation in preventing, combating, and eradicating human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and child sexual abuse through online platforms. This initiative addresses the new challenges posed by the rapid advancement of digital technology and seeks to enhance the protection of vulnerable women and children. During the forum, Ms. Srorn Sreynang, Deputy Governor of Kandal Province, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the risks of human trafficking and promoting the safe use of digital technologies. She also highlighted the need to encourage legal and safe migration to protect citizens' rights and dignity. Ms. Sreynang stated that addressing these issues is a shared responsibility of the government, all levels of authorities, relevant institutions, partner organizations, and all citizens. In the digital age, the rapid growth of the internet and social media has provided extensive opportunities for education, research, communication, and economic development. However, it has also created new challenges, with criminals exploiting modern technology to deceive, lure, and exploit children and youth through social networks and various communication applications. Particularly concerning are the increasing offenses of producing, possessing, and distributing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and online sexual exploitation, which are serious illegal acts that violate children's rights, destroy their future, and have severe repercussions for society as a whole. Therefore, education, legal dissemination, and raising awareness across all segments of society are effective preventive measures and a crucial foundation for reducing the risks of these offenses. Ms. Srorn Sreynang also urged citizens intending to work outside their locality or country to travel through legal channels, ensure they have adequate documentation, and seek information from competent authorities before deciding to migrate. This will help them avoid falling victim to traffickers, human trafficking, labor exploitation, and violations of labor rights, which can lead to dangerous situations, loss of freedom, and other severe consequences. Legal migration not only ensures personal safety but also guarantees that migrant workers receive protection of their rights, fair wages, social benefits, and legal assistance when facing problems abroad, in accordance with the laws of the host country and relevant agreements. Local authorities at all levels, relevant ministries and departments, educational institutions, partner organizations, and all citizens are called upon to continue collaborating to widely disseminate laws and knowledge to all communities, especially remote areas and regions with high migration rates, so that people understand the risks and methods of self-protection against human trafficking and all forms of exploitation. Furthermore, Ms. Srorn Sreynang encouraged parents and guardians to pay close attention to their children's use of mobile phones, the internet, and social media. They should guide their children on responsible, safe, and ethical technology use, and foster courage in them to report suspicious activities or online scams to adults or authorities when encountered. Additionally, the article included a call for citizens to exercise high vigilance and participate in preventing the outbreak of dengue fever, which is increasing during the rainy season. Parents and guardians were urged to cooperate with schools in maintaining a clean environment at home and monitoring their children's health to prevent the spread of dengue fever in the community.
