Singapore to Receive First F-35 Stealth Fighters by Late 2026

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) is poised for a significant leap forward, as the city-state is officially on track to receive its very first F-35 stealth fighter jets starting in late 2026. This historic milestone will place Singapore into an exclusive club of nations operating fifth-generation air power, a crucial development for a country that relies on advanced technology to safeguard its skies. Singapore has committed to acquiring a total of 20 F-35 jets to modernize its military. The fleet will comprise 12 short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) F-35B models and eight conventional F-35A models. The initial delivery will consist of four F-35B jets in late 2026. RSAF pilots will train alongside highly qualified U.S. Air Force instructors for several years, building deep operational familiarity and mastering the aircraft's complex systems, stealth tactics, and sensor fusion capabilities. Only after completing this rigorous training will the jets eventually move to Southeast Asia. Based on current estimates, the F-35s are expected to arrive at Singapore's Tengah Air Base around 2029. The choice of aircraft variants highlights Singapore's unique defense needs. The F-35B offers exceptional operational flexibility, capable of operating from shorter or damaged runways. The F-35A variant provides longer range and can carry heavier payloads, offering distinct tactical advantages. Together, they form a highly versatile combat force for the RSAF. Singapore's current fleet of F-16 fighter jets will undergo midlife upgrades but will eventually be phased out starting in the mid-2030s.
