Cambodia Urges Media to Promote National ID Card Acquisition for Citizen Engagement
Cambodia's Ministry of Information has urged domestic media outlets to promote the acquisition of National Identity Cards, emphasizing their importance for exercising voting rights and accessing public services. Efforts will also focus on raising awareness about the renewal and re-issuance processes for expired or lost cards.
The Ministry of Information of Cambodia has urged national media outlets to actively promote and encourage all citizens, regardless of age, to obtain their Cambodian National Identity Cards. This initiative aims to ensure that all citizens can exercise their right to vote and access public services as stipulated by law. This call to action was made during a briefing on public opinion information work for officials of the Information Department of Kampong Speu Province on July 14, 2026. Mr. Tep Asnarith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, specifically instructed the Information Departments of all provinces and cities, especially Kampong Speu, to focus on producing and disseminating more comprehensive content regarding the importance of obtaining a Cambodian National Identity Card. Mr. Asnarith emphasized that the identity card is a crucial document for every citizen, essential for utilizing public services, registering to vote, and completing various legal procedures. He also highlighted the need to remind citizens whose identity cards are nearing or have passed their expiration dates to promptly renew them to avoid any disruption in their daily use. The Ministry of Interior has previously announced that citizens aged 15 and above applying for their first identity card must provide a birth certificate or a certified copy, along with a residence book or family book (original or certified copy). For expired cards (over 10 years past expiry) or damaged/lost cards, the old card must be presented. In cases of loss, a certificate of loss from the competent police authority (administrative police post) is required. Citizens can obtain their Cambodian National Identity Cards at the administrative police posts of their commune/sub-district, or at the police inspectorates of their district/municipality/khan, or at the provincial police headquarters. The National Identity Card Department and AEON Mall 2 also facilitate these services.
