Vietnam's DNA Identification Effort Offers Hope to Families of Fallen Soldiers

In Vietnam's southern Ca Mau province, efforts are underway to identify the remains of soldiers who died for national independence over half a century ago. This initiative aims to fulfill the long-held wish of fallen soldiers' families to have their loved ones' names and hometowns restored. Currently, over 3,300 sets of remains in Ca Mau are undergoing DNA identification. Many of these soldiers were lost without their identities or final resting places being confirmed after their deaths in combat. This "returning names" effort involves sending the remains to identification centers in Hanoi for DNA analysis, ultimately aiming to reunite them with their families. Decades after the end of the Vietnam War, this endeavor acknowledges the profound grief and loss still felt by many surviving relatives. This operation, sometimes referred to as the "500 Days and Nights Campaign," is being promoted as a national project.
