Vietnam Government Strengthens Extreme Weather Response with Climate Action Plan

The Vietnamese government has issued a comprehensive action plan to strengthen its response to extreme weather and climate change. This plan, outlined in Government Resolution No. 201/NQ-CP, is based on the conclusions of the top leadership regarding disaster prevention and control, particularly concerning typhoons, floods, extreme weather events, and climate change. This action plan aims to further ensure national preparedness for natural disasters, which is crucial for the country's security and the stability of its citizens' lives. Vietnam has been significantly impacted by climate change in recent years, with instances such as record low water levels in the Mekong Delta and forecasts of widespread thunderstorms in the northern regions. The government is demanding a thorough review of the safety of all hydropower dams and irrigation reservoirs. This measure is intended to overcome infrastructure vulnerabilities and minimize damage, considering past incidents and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in recent times. Under Vietnam's one-party system, decisions made by the leadership on critical national issues are directly reflected in government policy formulation and execution. Climate change response is positioned as one of the top priorities for sustainable economic growth and protecting the livelihoods of the people. While the need for joint action on environmental issues as a neighboring country might be implied in relations with China, this plan primarily focuses on enhancing domestic disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities.
