Population change can strategically reshape the country's future

Population change can be a challenge for our country, as well as an opportunity to strategically reshape the country's future, said Vice President U Nyo So. He made these remarks while delivering a speech at the 2026 World Population Day commemoration ceremony held on July 11 at the Myanmar International Convention Centre (1) Jade Hall in Nay Pyi Taw. He stated that the process of population change is directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations, and that poverty reduction, health improvement, quality education, gender equality, decent job creation, and strengthening social protection systems can only be effectively implemented with a deep understanding of demographic composition and population change data. Therefore, he said, it is necessary to consider and implement the current population situation, future projections, and regional population differences when strategically advancing national development. Furthermore, he stated that to make accurate decisions, it is necessary to obtain accurate and comprehensive basic data on population and socio-economic conditions in various regions of the country. Vice President U Nyo So also stated that censuses, surveys, and statistical systems are vital basic data for future policy formulation, prioritization of investments, improvement of public services, and development of regional development plans.
