H.E. Dr. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, on July 9, 2026, received H.E. UENO Atsushi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia, for a farewell meeting at the Ministry of Tourism. H.E. Ambassador Ueno expressed his gratitude for the close cooperation from the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Ministry of Tourism. He affirmed Japan's continued support for strengthening and expanding cooperation between the two countries, especially in tourism, human resource development, tourism promotion, and people-to-people exchanges. H.E. Ambassador Ueno stated that during his tenure in Cambodia, he had traveled to all provinces and cities, gaining firsthand experience of Cambodia's rich tourism potential. He pledged to continue promoting these tourism potentials to the Japanese people and proposed a study on the feasibility of visa exemption for Japanese tourists visiting Cambodia. In response, H.E. Dr. Thong Khon expressed his deep gratitude to the Japanese government, people, and the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia for their continuous support for Cambodia's development and the tourism sector. He also praised and highly valued the efforts and active contributions of H.E. Ambassador Ueno in strengthening and expanding the excellent friendship and cooperation between the Kingdom of Cambodia and Japan, making it more robust and fruitful, especially in the tourism sector. He also requested Japan's continued assistance in promoting Cambodia's tourism potential, facilitating the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on tourism cooperation between the two countries, expanding flight connectivity between Japan and Cambodia, supporting training and human resource development in the tourism sector, and organizing familiarization trips (FAM Trips) for Japanese tourism companies, media, content creators, and investors to explore Cambodia's tourism potential. Minister Thong Khon reiterated his gratitude to the Japanese government and people, who have always been important partners of Cambodia, and reaffirmed the shared commitment to further strengthen and expand the good and fruitful cooperation between the two countries for the benefit of both nations and peoples. The Kingdom of Cambodia and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1953 and have since elevated their relationship to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership."
