Vietnam's International Air Passenger Traffic Surges 15.4% in H1; Cargo Shows Recovery

Vietnam's air passenger traffic increased by 15.4% year-on-year to 26.2 million in the first half of the year. During the reviewed period, Vietnamese airlines carried 9.6 million international passengers, a slight increase of 0.2 percent, accounting for 36.6 percent of total international passengers. Meanwhile, international air cargo volume reached 706,700 tons, an increase of 21.3 percent compared to the same period last year. The national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, transported 119,000 tons of cargo, up 8.6 percent year-on-year, representing 16.8 percent of the total. Domestic air cargo volume, however, saw a decrease of 7 percent, totaling 216,400 tons. Currently, Vietnamese airlines operate 109 international routes connecting Vietnam with 22 countries and territories worldwide. In parallel, foreign airlines from 41 countries and territories are operating 235 scheduled routes to Vietnam. The rise in passenger and cargo volumes indicates a recovery in Vietnam's economy and increased international connectivity. The growth in international passengers is likely driven by the resumption of tourism and business travel as the country continues its post-pandemic economic reopening.
