Cambodia Boosts Rural Economy with New Infrastructure in Banteay Meanchey
Banteay Meanchey province, Cambodia, has seen improved rural infrastructure with the inauguration of a rice collection facility and a 3.82km paved road. This development is expected to enhance market access for agricultural products, reduce transportation costs, and boost farmer incomes.
In Banteay Meanchey province, western Cambodia, rural infrastructure development is contributing to the revitalization of the regional economy. In Trang village, Mongkol Borei district, a rice collection facility and a 3.82-kilometer-long concrete and DBST asphalt road have been inaugurated, raising expectations for improved living standards for local residents and the promotion of agricultural commercialization. This infrastructure development was implemented as part of the SAAMBAT project, promoted by the Ministry of Rural Development. The inauguration ceremony was attended by numerous officials, including H.E. Uk Ponhea, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Rural Development and Project Director, representing H.E. Chhay Rithisen, Minister of Rural Development, as well as the Deputy Governor of Banteay Meanchey Province, the District Governor of Mongkol Borei, and the Provincial Director of the Ministry of Rural Development. Secretary of State Uk Ponhea emphasized that rural road development and production support infrastructure are indispensable for enabling farmers to transport their produce to market smoothly, rapidly, and at a lower cost. The newly established rice collection facility and road will serve as a foundation supporting the agricultural value chain, from production, collection, and transportation to distribution and market entry. This is expected to allow farmers to derive greater benefits from their produce. He further characterized the improvement of rural roads not merely as road construction, but as an investment in the local economy. High-quality roads, he explained, reduce the time and cost of transporting rice and other agricultural products to market, thereby enhancing product competitiveness. He also urged local authorities and residents to participate in maintaining the constructed infrastructure properly and utilizing it effectively to ensure the long-term benefit of the road and rice collection facility for the public. Moreover, he stressed the importance for farmers to continue strengthening their production capacity, improving product quality, and organizing production to meet market demands. He noted that merely producing a large yield is insufficient; focus must be placed on quality, standards, collection, and market access to ensure farmers receive fair prices. Through the implementation of the SAAMBAT project, the provision of production support infrastructure in rural areas is considered a key mechanism for increasing the ability of citizens, especially farmers, to connect with economic activities and markets. Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Banteay Meanchey stated that the inauguration of the 3.82-kilometer road and the rice collection facility represents another achievement contributing to the improvement of living standards for local residents, particularly by facilitating travel and the transportation of agricultural produce by farmers to market. He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Rural Development and the SAAMBAT project for their attention to rural infrastructure development in Banteay Meanchey province and requested the cooperation of the residents in preserving this achievement for long-term use. For farmers in Trang village and surrounding areas, the new road signifies more than just daily transportation; it is a vital link from farms and fields to collection points and markets. Easier transportation reduces time and cost losses and creates better opportunities for farmers to organize production and sell their products. The recently inaugurated infrastructure not only improves the landscape and mobility in rural areas but also strengthens the foundation for rural economic development, enhances the value of agricultural products, and more effectively connects farmers to the market, aligning with the goals of improving people's livelihoods and achieving sustainable rural development.
