TNI Discovers Over 21,400 Ganja Plants in Papua, Suspected OPM Link

The Indonesian Military (TNI) has announced the discovery and eradication of a large cannabis plantation in Papua, seizing over 21,400 plants. The operation took place in the villages of Ibiroma and Hesmat, located in Kurima District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Mountains. Panglima Kogabwilhan III Lt. Gen. Lucky Avianto stated that the seized cannabis plants are estimated to be worth around IDR 8 billion (approximately USD 500,000). The eradication was carried out as part of "Operation Kinetik 3.18," involving 78 personnel from the TNI's 725/Woroagi Infantry Battalion (WRG), which is part of the Habema Operational Task Force. During the operation, TNI personnel conducted sweeps and cleared the cannabis plants found in both villages. Based on information gathered in the field, the existence of these cannabis fields is suspected to be connected with the activities of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) led by Egianus Kogoya. "The discovery of tens of thousands of cannabis plants has been secured as part of efforts to prevent the circulation and abuse of narcotics in the Papua Mountains region," Lt. Gen. Avianto said in a written statement on Friday (11/9). He further emphasized the TNI's commitment to continuously maintaining security and stability in the Papua region and supporting the government's efforts to eradicate the circulation and abuse of narcotics, which can threaten communities and the younger generation. "For this success, the personnel of the 725/WRG Task Force involved in carrying out the duties received a reward as a form of appreciation for their dedication and success in carrying out their duties," he added. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Indonesian authorities in maintaining security and combating illegal activities in the restive Papua region, where separatist groups like the OPM have been active. The eradication of drug plantations is seen as a crucial step in disrupting criminal networks and promoting stability.
