Soldier, Volunteer Teacher Killed in Lanao del Sur Ambush

COTABATO CITY – A soldier and a volunteer teacher were killed after still unidentified armed men ambushed a pick-up truck carrying government forces along Malabang, Lanao del Sur, on Saturday afternoon, police confirmed Monday. Capt. Steffi Salanguit, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), identified the fatalities as Cpl. Jayson Castro, a resident of Barangay Dipolo, Molave, Zamboanga del Sur, and Hapipa Saripada Macadato, 23, of Barangay Punong, Picong, Lanao del Sur. Macadato was a volunteer teacher under the Bangsamoro Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education (MBHTE), and was a “collateral damage” in the incident. Salanguit said Castro was aboard a white Toyota Hilux (plate number KAR 1864) with fellow soldiers and members of the Civilian Armed Force Geographical Unit Active Auxiliary (CAFGU-CAA). The group was returning to camp after conducting an area security operation in Barangay Baraas, Malabang. While traversing Barangay Lamin, the vehicle was ambushed by at least 10 armed men. The vehicle’s driver, Richard Estomen, was wounded, while five CAA members survived the attack. Macadato, who was on her way home aboard a motorized tricycle locally known as a “payong-payong,” was caught in the crossfire. She sustained a gunshot wound to the back of the head that killed her. Authorities recovered empty shells of 7.62mm and 5.56mm believed to have been fired from M14 and M16 rifles, as well as a rifle grenade, from the scene. The Malabang Municipal Police Station has launched an investigation to identify the attackers and determine the motive behind the ambush. The MBHTE condemned the killing of Macadato and extended its condolences to her family, saying it is coordinating with authorities as the investigation continues.
