Lai Chau Ginseng Targets International Markets to Boost Forest Economy

Blessed with rare and distinctive ecological values, the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau is stepping up efforts to conserve and develop its native ginseng, with the medicinal plant expected to play a growing role in the forest-based economy and local livelihoods. Dr. Tran Minh Ngoc, Director of the National Institute of Medicinal Materials under the Ministry of Health, said Ngoc Linh ginseng (Panax vietnamensis) is an endemic species found only in Vietnam's Ngoc Linh mountain range at elevations of 1,500–2,100 metres. Ngoc Linh ginseng, a prized medicinal herb and symbol of highland communities’ pride, was honoured at a cultural event in the central coastal city of Da Nang. The ginseng procession and traditional fire-lighting ceremony recreated local traditions while highlighting efforts to preserve and promote Vietnam’s national treasure. Lai Chau province aims to adopt international standards in ginseng cultivation, processing, and distribution to enhance product quality and competitiveness in global markets. Under Vietnam's single-party system, the government spearheads economic development strategies, fostering regional specialties to promote local economic independence and improve citizens' livelihoods. Products like Ngoc Linh ginseng are part of a strategy to link Vietnam's diverse geography and cultural heritage with economic value. The expansion into international markets aligns with Vietnam's export diversification strategy, a focus in recent years. Particularly in relations with China, Vietnam has strengthened market and production chain connectivity through trade and investment cooperation, and the export of high-value agricultural products like Ngoc Linh ginseng could create new opportunities within this dynamic. However, entering international markets also presents challenges such as quality control, brand building, and combating counterfeiting. The Vietnamese government is expected to advance regulatory frameworks and international cooperation to address these issues.
