Hanoi Residents and Soldiers Battle Rising Bui River Waters, Reinforcing Dykes Amidst Heavy Rains

On the afternoon of September 16, the water level of the Bui River at Yen Duyet, Xuan Mai town (Hanoi) exceeded alert level 3 by approximately 0.22 meters and continued to rise. Hundreds of officers, soldiers, and residents are urgently reinforcing vulnerable sections of the dykes. The water level at the Yen Duyet station reached 7.22 meters, with projections indicating a rise to 7.4 meters, about 0.4 meters above alert level 3. Water has already breached some lower dyke sections by about 20 cm, flowing into the inland agricultural areas. Vietnam, situated in a tropical monsoon climate, frequently experiences heavy rainfall, particularly in the northern regions during the summer and autumn. In recent years, the impacts of climate change have led to an increasing trend of extreme weather events. Responding to such natural disasters is a significant challenge for the Vietnamese government. There is a pressing need for infrastructure development to protect densely populated and agricultural areas, as well as the establishment of a robust and rapid disaster response system. This incident exemplifies one aspect of the challenges Vietnam faces.
