Vietnam Proposes 7.8% Minimum Wage Hike by 2027

The National Wage Council of Vietnam has agreed to propose a 7.8% increase in the regional minimum wage, effective January 1, 2027, which will be submitted to the government for decision. This is seen as an effort to achieve a harmonious adjustment between improving workers' incomes and alleviating the burden on businesses. The council reached this agreement after considering the opinions of both the labor union side and the employer side. Under Vietnam's one-party system, wage policies serve the dual purpose of maintaining social stability and economic growth, with the government consistently making decisions that balance labor and capital. This proposal also addresses rising living costs associated with rapid economic growth and recent inflationary pressures. While Vietnam's economy has achieved remarkable growth, particularly in manufacturing, ensuring that the benefits reach all workers is crucial for sustainable development. A minimum wage hike can stimulate domestic consumption but may also increase costs for some labor-intensive industries. Therefore, the council needed to carefully analyze economic conditions and price trends to balance this with maintaining corporate competitiveness. Upon receiving this proposal, the government, which holds the final decision-making power, will comprehensively assess the impact on national livelihoods after hearing opinions from various industries and local authorities.
