Cambodia Proposes 'Inter-Parliamentary Observers' to Resolve Border Disputes, Multiple Parties Express Support

The Senate President of Cambodia, Hun Sen, has put forth a new proposal aimed at resolving border disputes with Thailand. This initiative involves establishing an inter-parliamentary observer group to monitor the implementation of ceasefire agreements. The proposal has garnered support from several political parties within Cambodia. During a press conference on September 2, 2026, Un Vissitkhun, President of the Cambodian Democratic Force Party, declared his support for Senate President Hun Sen's proposal. He stated, "This is the best indicator that every Cambodian wants to see, urging the international community to end the war caused by Thailand's violation of Cambodian territory." He further added, "The Cambodian people do not want war and do not want to lose their economy. That is why we demand the international community to help resolve this. Samdech Techo Hun Sen's initiative at the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Union's Conference of Speakers (ISC-2) aims to show the international community that it is Thailand that is invading Cambodia." A representative from the National Force Party also stated that political parties, civil society organizations, and the people support Samdech Techo because he has brought their hardships to the attention of the international community, seeking help to end the conflict and restore peace for the people of both nations. "We call on the international community to place pressure on Thai leadership to enter into negotiations with Cambodia to quickly end the border disputes between the two countries, which will benefit the people," the representative urged. Meanwhile, Un Chim, President of the Khmer Unity Party, also announced his support for Senate President Hun Sen's proposal. He noted that this is the first time Cambodia has requested all international parliaments to establish a commission to investigate and intervene in Thailand's invasion of Cambodian sovereign territory. "This proposal draws international attention to the aggressor nation and helps protect smaller countries from invasion, such as Thailand's invasion of Cambodia," he remarked. He further elaborated, "Therefore, in addition to diplomatic interventions and the deployment of country representatives, Samdech has now requested further intervention from the international community. This point represents the most significant diplomatic work, clearly identifying Thailand as the aggressor against Cambodia." Mr. Chim also indicated that this commission would not solely focus on Thailand's invasion of Cambodia but would also collaborate with other countries facing similar invasion scenarios.
