Nepal Floods Bring Strange Fish to India, Authorities Issue Warning

Authorities in India's northern Bihar state have issued a warning to residents about unusual fish that have entered the region following floods caused by an ice avalanche in Nepal. The public has been advised against purchasing, selling, or consuming these fish. The floods, originating from the Trishuli River in Nepal, have led to the influx of abnormally large and unfamiliar fish into Bihar through major waterways like the Gandak and Kosi rivers. Reports indicate that some residents have fallen ill after consuming these fish. Fishermen have reportedly caught fish that are larger and different from those they typically encounter. Local officials have stated that a number of people have subsequently suffered from sickness after eating the unusual catch. The Department of Fisheries and Animal Resources in Bihar released a directive on Monday, cautioning against the consumption, purchase, or sale of any strange or unidentified fish caught in the floodwaters. The department explained that during floods, fish can be displaced from their natural habitats and exposed to polluted water, dead animals, and other toxic substances. The danger, it stated, lies not with the fish themselves but with what they may have absorbed during their journey through the floodwaters. The department urged citizens to refrain from eating fish caught from floodwaters until the situation normalizes.
