Tulfo Seeks Probe into Rising Electricity Bills, Cites Consumer Protection

Senator Erwin T. Tulfo has filed a resolution seeking an inquiry into electricity bill increases and alleged inaccurate meter readings to strengthen consumer protection. This move underscores growing public concern over the cost of electricity, a critical household expense. Mr. Tulfo stated that recurring complaints warrant a review of existing laws governing the power sector and complaint-resolution mechanisms. The proposal follows a Senate hearing where the Department of Energy reported that the Philippines has the highest residential electricity rates in Southeast Asia. Residential rates reached P16.57 per kilowatt-hour in on-grid areas in June and P24.92 per kilowatt-hour in off-grid areas dependent on oil-fired generation. The high electricity costs in the Philippines are linked to economic conditions and structural issues in energy supply. Dependence on imported fuel makes the country susceptible to global energy price fluctuations.
