Fire at Surabaya's Pakuwon Trade Centre Rooftop Quickly Contained

A fire was reported in the rooftop area of the Pakuwon Trade Centre (PTC) Mall in Wiyung, Surabaya, East Java. However, the management has confirmed that the incident was quickly brought under control and the situation is now stable. The fire, which occurred on the roof of the mall located in West Surabaya, was captured in amateur videos that spread on social media, causing concern among netizens, particularly in the provincial capital of East Java. Sutandi Purnomosidi, Marketing Director of Pakuwon Group, confirmed the incident, stating that the fire was first detected around 11:30 AM WIB in the cooling tower area. He explained that the fire ignited from discarded cardboard boxes used as packaging for materials during a cooling tower replacement operation. "At 11:30 AM, fire was detected in the cooling tower area," Sutandi told CNNIndonesia.com on Friday (25/9) afternoon. He further elaborated that there was an ongoing operation to replace the cooling tower in that area, and the fire burned through discarded cardboard from unpacking materials. "During that time, there was a cooling tower replacement operation in the area, and discarded cardboard from unpacking materials," he said. Internal security teams at Pakuwon immediately responded and managed to extinguish the fire within approximately 12 minutes, by 11:42 AM WIB. This swift action prevented the flames from spreading to tenant areas or affecting mall visitors. "The fire was successfully extinguished by the Pakuwon team at 11:42 AM," Sutandi stated. Sutandi assured that there were no casualties or significant property damage resulting from the incident. He clarified that the fire only consumed the used cardboard from the cooling tower packaging. "Just the used cardboard from the cooling tower. No damage. No casualties," he said. Similarly, M. Rokhim, Head of the Fire Suppression Division at the Surabaya City Fire and Rescue Department (DPKP), stated that the fire was confined to wooden debris on the rooftop of PTC Mall. He confirmed that the mall's internal security team independently handled the fire suppression, and the fire department's role was limited to an inspection after the blaze was already extinguished.
