Cambodian Senate Leader Urges Displaced Citizens to Stay United, Turn Hardship into Strength

AKP Phnom Penh, September 14, 2026 -- The Second Vice President of Cambodia’s Senate, H.E. Dr. Thun Vathana, called on displaced residents taking shelter in Banteay Meanchey province to maintain national solidarity, preserve hope, and transform their present hardships into a driving force for nation-building. H.E. Dr. Thun Vathana, who also serves as a permanent member of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC), made the remarks on Sunday while visiting displaced families in Rong Cham (Waiting) 1 village, Sla Kram commune, Svay Chek district. Leading a delegation on behalf of UYFC President H.E. Hun Many, he distributed essential relief supplies and aid to alleviate living conditions and bolster morale as residents await return to their home villages. Addressing the community, the Senate leader noted that the name "Rong Cham" village (Waiting Village) carries profound meaning as a temporary refuge for citizens awaiting their return home. He emphasised that this waiting process represents hope, patience, and unity rather than despair. He urged residents to remain confident in Royal Government’s efforts to resolve issues peacefully in line with international law, while maintaining close cooperation with local authorities. Highlighting the importance of human resource development, H.E. Dr. Thun Vathana encouraged parents to maintain their children's education despite current difficulties, emphasising English language acquisition and practical skills needed for the future. "Remembering the difficult days at 'Rong Cham' is not intended to revive past pain, but to learn from experience, build our capabilities, and work together to secure a peaceful and prosperous future for coming generations," he said, adding that historical lessons of territorial invasion must reinforce patriotism and national unity. He underscored that enhancing public capabilities, improving livelihoods, and fostering community development form the core foundation for a strong nation capable of protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. During the visit, H.E. Dr. Thun Vathana also travelled to Kok Romiet commune to assess local conditions and directly engage with affected residents regarding their immediate needs. He expressed gratitude to H.E. Ke Kim Yan, Member of the Supreme Privy Council to His Majesty the King and lawmaker for Banteay Meanchey, for donating land for housing construction, while thanking private donors and partner companies for providing financial and material assistance. Reflecting on the relationship between citizens and the state, the Senate leader affirmed that mutual trust remains crucial for safeguarding sovereignty, preserving peace, and achieving sustainable community development.
