World Maritime Day: Commemorative event held in Yangon

Under the theme, “From Policy to Practice: World Maritime Day 2026 was held at the Wyndham Grand Hotel in Yangon on Thursday Deputy Minister for Transport U Tun Lu attended the event together with concerned officials and delegates from international organizations. Speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Minister stated key international conventions, codes and guidelines adopted by the International Maritime Organization to ensure maritime safety and secure shipping, which also assists UN 2030 Sustainable Development Plan, expanding maritime trading and networks, job creation and prevent aquatic environment. The Deputy Minister called for cooperative efforts of all stakeholders for maritime sector development of the country. Subsequently, a video clip from the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization was screened and Director General from the Department of Maritime Administration briefed on the future plans. During the ceremony, honoury awards were presented to three outstanding Seafarer Recruitment and Placement Services companies. This was followed by presentation of documentary activities on World Maritime Day 2026 Theme “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence” and maritime operational records. The Deputy Minister and party later toured around the commemorative booths.
