Cambodian Justice Minister Emphasizes Peaceful Border Resolution to UN Special Rapporteur

On the afternoon of July 30, 2026, Cambodian Minister of Justice, Kitt Rith, briefed UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, Thomas Andrews, on the ongoing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, which has been protracted for over a year. Minister Kitt further highlighted Cambodia's stance, emphasizing its commitment to resolving disputes with Thailand through peaceful means. He also expressed gratitude to Mr. Thomas Andrews for his visit to inspect the situation of Cambodian refugees along the Cambodia-Thailand border. Cambodia has consistently demonstrated its commitment and position to resolve border issues peacefully, based on international law and in accordance with existing conventions, treaties, and agreements between Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodia also consistently declares its defense of the international Cambodia-Thailand border line, as established by the Indochina-Siam Border Commission, respecting the principles of international law, the immutability of border lines, the French-Siam conventions, maps resulting from the demarcation work of the Indochina-Siam Boundary Commission, as well as various agreements and related documents that both parties have previously agreed upon. In this regard, Cambodia absolutely does not recognize any alteration of the border line resulting from the use of force and illegal occupation of territory through the creation of de facto situations on the ground. In addition to border issues, the meeting between Minister Kitt Rith and Mr. Thomas Andrews also discussed the issue of online scams, as well as several other matters of the Ministry of Justice, such as prison overcrowding, juvenile justice, drug problems, and the process of amending certain laws related to the justice sector. Regarding online scams, the Minister of Justice described the commitment and efforts of the Cambodian government in combating technological fraud (online scams), which is considered one of the most important priorities. Following the discussions and exchange of views, both parties affirmed their commitment to continue sincere cooperation through dialogue and mutual information sharing to jointly assist the Cambodian people.
