Indonesian Shrimp Poised for Global Dominance with Advanced Technology and Strict Management

The head of Indonesia's Quarantine Agency (Barantin), Abdul Kadir Karding, has expressed strong optimism that Indonesian shrimp commodities hold substantial potential to ascend to the top global position. Karding underscored that the successful cultivation of shrimp hinges on critical factors such as the adoption of modern technology, strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), and the diligent management of both the parent stock and the overall cultivation environment. During his visit to PT Boga Tama Marinusa (Bomar) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, he remarked, "If shrimp are managed properly, Indonesia can become the number one shrimp player in the world." His visit offered a direct observation of a shrimp cultivation system that operates with high standards across various stages, including broodstock management, seedling production, hatchery operations, and environmental control within the cultivation areas. He evaluated that the implemented system clearly illustrates how the judicious application of technology and effective governance can lead to a significant increase in fish survival rates. Specifically, the hatchery process achieved a survival rate for fry exceeding 95 percent, a testament to the superior technology and cultivation standards employed, far surpassing conventional methods. The head of Barantin further indicated that this exemplary cultivation system could be instrumental as a model for the broader development of the national shrimp industry. Tigor, the CEO of PT BomarTigor, concurred, emphasizing that any increase in national shrimp production must originate from enhancements in the upstream sector. He identified the quality of broodstock and the efficiency of seedling production as the most significant challenges confronting the shrimp industry. He also stressed the indispensable nature of consistently applying Good Fish Farming Methods (CBIB) and the necessity for business actors to continuously update their technological capabilities to effectively surmount the various hurdles encountered during the cultivation phase. Moreover, the Barantin chief emphasized the paramount importance of quarantine procedures in safeguarding the health and quality of fishery commodities that traverse between regions and countries. He elaborated that Barantin's core responsibility is to ensure that all fishery commodities, whether moving between islands or across international borders, are healthy and that their quality and value are meticulously preserved.
