Vietnamese President Meets U.S. Trade Representative, Deepening Economic Ties

General Secretary and President To Lam met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New York on September 21, 2026, while attending the high-level general debate of the 81st UNGA session. During the meeting, To Lam affirmed Viet Nam's importance attached to the comprehensive strategic partnership with the U.S. He expressed his desire to work with the Trump Administration to advance bilateral ties in a stable, substantive, effective, and sustainable manner. The top Vietnamese leader noted that economic, trade, and investment cooperation remains a key pillar of Viet Nam-U.S. relations, bringing practical benefits to the people and businesses of both countries. He also stated that Viet Nam has stepped up efforts to increase imports from the U.S. to promote balanced trade. Furthermore, To Lam suggested that the U.S. adopt a comprehensive approach to the remaining trade issues, including investigations under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act. He called on both sides to continue efforts to further promote bilateral economic, trade, and investment cooperation for the benefit of both nations. Jamieson Greer appreciated Viet Nam's efforts to balance the trade ties between the two countries. He also spoke highly of both sides' efforts in negotiations on a reciprocal, fair, and balanced trade agreement, adding that the two countries are approaching final agreement. The U.S. Trade Representative stated that the signing and implementation of the agreement would help open up new cooperation opportunities between the two countries.
