Myanmar has not failed in its responsibilities at all for ASEAN relations, says Presidential Office Spokesperson

Dr. Khine Khine Soe, the spokesperson for the Presidential Office, stated that Myanmar has not failed in its responsibilities at all for its relations with ASEAN. This was stated by Dr. Khine Khine Soe, the spokesperson for the Presidential Office, in response to a journalist's question about Myanmar's participation status in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting to be held in July and the ASEAN Summit to be held in November, during a press conference held by the Presidential Office in Nay Pyi Taw this afternoon (June 30). "When asked if we will attend the ASEAN meeting, I would like to ask in return if we will be invited. If invited, we will attend. The question is whether we will be invited, and another point is that they later specify which level of officials, who from MOFA, and how they will come. However, as I mentioned earlier, we have not failed in our responsibilities at all for our relations with ASEAN in the region. We are always participating," said Dr. Khine Khine Soe. A delegation led by U Hauk Khan Sum, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar, attended the 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings held in Cebu City, Philippines, from May 7 to 8, 2026. At the ASEAN Summit (Plenary Session) and the ASEAN Summit (Retreat), issues concerning regional energy security, food security, and the safety of citizens from ASEAN member states residing in the Middle East were discussed. Furthermore, at the meeting, methods to manage and mitigate the impacts of oil supply and price instability caused by geopolitical tensions, lessons learned from recent geopolitical challenges, progress in building the ASEAN Community, and issues concerning enhancing cooperation between ASEAN and external partners were exchanged. The leader of the Myanmar delegation participated in discussions regarding the enhancement of cooperation among ASEAN member states for regional energy and food security, and participation in the ASEAN Community building process, and briefed on the political developments in Myanmar, including the priorities of the new Myanmar government. Prior to the ASEAN Summit, the Myanmar delegation attended the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting held on May 7, 2026, the 31st ASEAN Political-Security Community Council Meeting, the 38th ASEAN Coordinating Council Meeting, and the Joint Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers and ASEAN Economic Ministers.
