Over 35,600 E-cigarettes Seized in Laos' Boten, Targeting Illegal Trade

Authorities in Boten Zone, Luang Namtha Province, have seized over 35,600 e-cigarettes during an operation to crack down on the illegal transport of e-cigarettes. According to the Luang Namtha Provincial Public Security Headquarters, the seizure took place at approximately 6:00 PM on September 12, 2026. Police had received information from a member of the public about a group suspected of transporting illegal e-cigarettes and dispatched specialized officers to the area. Officers inspected the scene and found nine individuals, including one woman, transferring goods from a six-wheeled truck with a Chinese license plate (K135114) to another six-wheeled truck bearing a Luang Prabang license plate (Bk 3859). A subsequent inspection uncovered 110 large cartons and 13 small cartons containing a total of 35,600 e-cigarettes, hidden beneath other goods. The case is being handled under Article 315 of the Penal Code of the Lao PDR, which concerns the illegal transport of psychotropic and psychoactive substances. The Boten Zone Public Security Command has handed over the suspects and seized items to the relevant divisions of the Luang Namtha Provincial Public Security Command for further investigation, including efforts to identify other individuals involved in the network and bring those responsible to justice. In the context of Laos' one-party system, maintaining social order and combating illegal activities, such as the smuggling of illicit substances and increasingly e-cigarettes, is a priority.
