The military junta carried out a group airstrike using jet fighters and Y-12 utility aircraft on June 1 at around 10:00 p.m., targeting Maungdaw Town and surrounding areas under the control of the Arakan Army (AA) in Arakan (Rakhine) State. More than 10 bombs were dropped around several locations, including the Maungdaw town entrance gate, the 3-Mile area, and the vicinity of the former Border Police Battalion No. 5 (BPB 5) headquarters. “Two jet fighters first dropped bombs near the town entrance gate. Then more bombs landed around the 3-Mile area and near the BPB 5 site. Y-12 aircraft also took part in the bombing mission. We heard at least more than 10 explosions,” said a Maungdaw resident. DMG is still investigating the aftermath of the airstrike, including casualties, damage, and other impacts. Earlier on June 24, another airstrike near a youth training school in Maungdaw Township injured two women. “Recently, the junta has been carrying out repeated bombings on Maungdaw. Because of this, locals are extremely worried and frightened. Some have already fled to villages where their relatives live. Maungdaw is now seeing a revival in cross-border trade, so the junta may be conducting these airstrikes to instill fear among residents,” said another source from the town. The AA fully captured Maungdaw on December 8, 2024, and has since established effective control over the Myanmar–Bangladesh border area. In neighboring Buthidaung, the junta also carried out airstrikes using fighter jets and Y-12 aircraft on June 1. The attack injured two children and a 50-year-old man in Kyatmauktaung Muslim village and damaged nearly 10 houses, according to reports. The coup regime has been conducting near-daily airstrikes in the Bangladesh-border townships of Buthidaung and Maungdaw in recent days.
