Vietnam and India Agree to Expand Air Services, Doubling Weekly Capacity

Vietnam and India have reached an agreement to significantly expand air services between the two countries. The new accord, which takes immediate effect, will double the weekly passenger capacity limit from the current 8,000 seats to 16,800 seats. This expansion comes as airlines from both nations are nearing or have already fully utilized their existing traffic rights amid growing travel demand. The agreement is expected to further boost substantive cooperation between the two countries, aligning with their shared goal of reaching a bilateral trade target of US$25 billion by 2026. Bilateral trade between Vietnam and India has already surpassed US$10 billion in the first half of 2026, indicating a steadily strengthening economic relationship. The increase in flight capacity is anticipated to facilitate more business travel and tourism, thereby invigorating people-to-people exchanges and economic activities between Vietnam and India. Vietnam, under its one-party system, is actively pursuing stronger international ties to sustain its economic growth. Relations with India hold strategic importance for Vietnam, particularly in balancing its geopolitical landscape with China. The expansion of air services is seen as a step towards deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations, offering economic benefits and enhancing diplomatic ties.
