Bamboo Shoots Bring Prosperity to Lao Cai's Mountainous Regions, Lifting Farmers Out of Poverty

In the mountainous regions of Lao Cai province in northern Vietnam, communities once struggling with poverty are dramatically improving their lives through the cultivation of a specialty bamboo shoot known as 'Bao Gai'. Introduced to the area in 2007, this bamboo shoot has rapidly become a symbol of prosperity for many farmers. Hà Thị Khuyến, a local resident in Hưng Khánh xã, efficiently peels fresh bamboo shoots for direct delivery to a processing plant within the village. Her household harvests about five segments of the stalk and the tip from each approximately 150 cm tall shoot, with the stalk purchased at 6,200 VND/kg and the tip at 5,800 VND/kg. Farmers like Khuyến have moved beyond difficult living conditions by combining bamboo shoot cultivation with acting as purchasing agents for the crop. Giàng A Chổng, a 41-year-old Hmong individual, has built a spacious new home costing over one billion VND (approximately $40,000 USD) through his involvement in bamboo shoot farming and acting as a purchasing agent. Before 2010, his village faced severe poverty and food insecurity, but bamboo cultivation has since transformed the situation. Lao Cai province is also seeing growth in other agricultural sectors, including cinnamon, medicinal plants, and citrus fruits, with government support contributing to rural development. Access to loans for the poor has been a significant factor in economic progress. Nguyễn Kiên Định, Director of Yamazaki Vietnam Co., Ltd., emphasizes the company's focus on establishing stable raw material sources and improving quality to meet export standards. The factory currently employs around 70 workers, predominantly ethnic minority women, who earn an average monthly income of approximately 8 million VND (around $320 USD). The company aims to produce 3,250 tons of products and achieve a revenue of 38 billion VND (approximately $1.5 million USD) by 2025. Nguyễn Tuấn Anh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hưng Khánh xã, highlights that the success of bamboo cultivation is due to the establishment of a sustainable value chain involving farmers, cooperatives, and processing enterprises. The commune plans to expand its bamboo shoot cultivation area to 2,500 hectares by 2025, targeting sales of 10,500 tons and revenues exceeding 60 billion VND (approximately $2.4 million USD), with the poverty rate dropping to just 0.76%. Bamboo shoots are well-suited to local conditions and less susceptible to extreme weather. Beyond their economic value, bamboo roots help prevent soil erosion and mitigate the risk of landslides during the rainy season. The Lao Cai provincial government is considering a support policy for bamboo shoot production areas, offering subsidies of 20-30 million VND per hectare to help farmers invest in infrastructure and initial fertilization, fostering concentrated and sustainable raw material zones.
