Baguio Residents Satisfied with Economy, Education; Concerned Over Housing, Environment

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Residents expressed satisfaction with Baguio’s economy, education system, and safety, but raised concerns over housing affordability, environmental degradation, and climate change awareness, according to a 2025 quality of life survey presented to the city council this week. Donna Tabangin, the city planning, development and sustainability officer, said the survey “gives us guidance.” According to the survey, approximately 70% of respondents rated the city’s economy as “good” or “very good.” Regarding the education system, about 65% expressed “satisfaction” or “very satisfaction.” On safety, around 75% felt the city is “safe” or “very safe,” a high level compared to other major cities in the Philippines. However, challenges were also highlighted. Approximately 60% of respondents stated that rising housing prices are impacting their lives, with access to affordable housing being difficult, particularly for younger generations and low-income individuals. Concerning environmental issues, about 55% expressed concern over the city’s environmental deterioration, pointing to waste management and green space preservation as urgent tasks. Regarding climate change awareness, roughly 45% responded that it is “low” or “very low,” suggesting the need for public awareness campaigns. Baguio City is popular as one of the country's leading residential areas due to its beautiful scenery and relatively high quality of life, but it is facing challenges associated with urban development.
