PNP Backs Joint Task Force for Palawan Ferry Fire Probe

MANILA, Philippines — With the death toll at 77 and eight people still missing, the Philippine National Police on Sunday said it supports the creation of a proposed interagency task force to investigate the MV June Aster tragedy and determine the truth. The MV June Aster, operated by Atienza Interisland Ferries, was en route from Palawan when the fire broke out. The PNP’s statement came after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a swift and thorough investigation into the incident. “We support the creation of an interagency task force to look into the incident and determine the truth,” PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acotuna said in a statement. Acotuna said the PNP would participate in the task force and contribute its resources and expertise to the investigation. “We want to ensure that all angles are covered and that justice will be served to the victims and their families,” he added. The MV June Aster, a passenger ferry, was traveling from Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro to Cuyo, Palawan when it caught fire at sea. Of the 77 fatalities, 60 have been identified, while 17 remain unidentified. Authorities are still trying to locate the eight missing persons. The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has suspended the license of Atienza Interisland Ferries pending the investigation. Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has deployed its assets to assist in search and rescue operations and to secure the area. Several government agencies, including the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of Health (DOH), and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), are involved in the response efforts.
