Cambodia Navigates China Ties Amid Economic Growth and Regional Shifts

Cambodia is facing a dual challenge of maintaining its close relationship with China while navigating diplomatic balance within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and ensuring sustainable domestic economic development. China is Cambodia's largest trading partner and a major investor. Financial aid and technical cooperation from China are indispensable, particularly in infrastructure development. In recent years, under China's Belt and Road Initiative, large-scale infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and ports have been steadily advanced within Cambodia, serving as a driving force for economic growth. Development of special economic zones is also progressing, contributing to attracting manufacturing industries and creating employment opportunities. These economic benefits are a significant reason why the Cambodian government prioritizes its relationship with China. However, as economic dependence on China increases, challenges such as widening economic disparities within the country, environmental issues in some regions, and social friction have been pointed out. In particular, large-scale development projects can sometimes lead to social issues related to resident relocation and land acquisition. Diplomatically, Cambodia is pursuing a careful balancing act within the ASEAN framework between China and other member states. Regarding complex geopolitical issues in the region, such as the South China Sea dispute, Cambodia emphasizes ASEAN's unity while being mindful not to damage its relationship with China. This sense of balance is crucial for Cambodia to play its unique role in the region. Looking ahead, for Cambodia to achieve sustainable economic development and contribute to regional stability, it will be necessary to strategically manage its relationship with China while strengthening its response to domestic socio-economic challenges.
