Myanmar junta assures Myanmar territory will not be used for activities detrimental to India's security

At the 23rd India-Myanmar bilateral meeting held in New Delhi, India on July 7 and 8, the Myanmar military junta assured that Myanmar territory would not be allowed to be used for activities detrimental to India's security interests. According to a statement released by the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs after the meeting, the representatives of both countries reviewed the current security situation along the India-Myanmar border and reiterated the importance of maintaining peace, stability, and security in the border region. The statement read, "Both sides emphasized the importance of preventing the use of their respective sovereign territories for activities that are detrimental to the security interests of the other country. The Myanmar military junta also assured that Myanmar territory would not be allowed to be used for activities detrimental to India's security interests." Furthermore, both sides agreed on the importance of close cooperation for the early completion of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway project. During the meeting, the status of bilateral security cooperation between the two countries and the progress of previous agreements were reviewed, and cooperation in combating cross-border crime was also discussed. This included joint efforts to combat terrorism, armed insurgency, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, human trafficking, wildlife trafficking, cybercrime, and other organized crimes. Additionally, both sides agreed to enhance the exchange of intelligence information, increase operational coordination and cooperation, and implement capacity-building programs to effectively address the security challenges faced by both countries. The meeting was led by the Union Home Secretary of India, Govind Mohan, and the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs of the Myanmar military junta, Lieutenant General Min Thu. During the meeting, both countries reaffirmed their long-standing friendly relations and partnership and pledged to further strengthen cooperation for mutual benefit. India also emphasized that Myanmar holds a significant place in India's "Neighbourhood First" policy, "Act East" policy, and MAHASAGAR ("Mutual and Multi-sectoral Advancement for Regional Security and Growth") policy. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the meeting and agreed to continue enhancing security cooperation among relevant agencies through existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms, regular mutual interactions, training programs, and the implementation of agreed-upon decisions.
