Sara Duterte Impeachment Trial: Legal Luminaries to Advise on Conviction Vote Threshold

Legal luminaries are set to take center stage on Wednesday in the impeachment trial of Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte, not as witnesses, but as amici curiae, or friends of the court. They will assist in resolving complex questions regarding the conviction vote threshold required to find the Vice President guilty. Senate President Francis Escudero, who presides over the impeachment court, stated that no trial proceedings will take place on Wednesday. This decision is to allow ample time for four retired Supreme Court justices to provide expert legal advice following the ruling on the 16-vote threshold necessary to convict the Vice President. Set to appear before the court to present their positions and field questions from the senator-judges are three former magistrates: Retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban, Retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno, and Retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Adolf Azcuna. Retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. will also participate, though his contribution will be through a legal memorandum rather than a physical appearance. This move highlights the critical legal point at stake in the impeachment proceedings, seeking expert opinions to navigate the crucial voting requirement for conviction and potentially influence the trial's outcome.
