PSI Unfazed by Potential Hike in Indonesian Parliamentary Threshold

The Solidarity Party of Indonesia (PSI) has asserted its readiness to face any parliamentary threshold (PT) that may be set for the 2029 General Election, even if it is pegged at 5%. Raja Juli Antoni, the Secretary General of PSI, stated that since PSI does not have seats in the House of Representatives (DPR), it will accept and follow whatever decision is made by the parliament regarding the threshold. "Yes, fundamentally, we are not in parliament, we are not in the DPR. Whatever is decided by the parliament, PSI, God willing, is ready," said Raja Juli at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Thursday (24/9/2026). Raja Juli mentioned that PSI has experience participating in two previous elections. He also noted that PSI is now led by Kaesang Pangarep and receives full endorsement from the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo. "Moreover, God willing, with the experience of two elections, now we have Mas Kaesang as Chairman, and then Mr. Jokowi, God willing, also fully endorses PSI, God willing, we won't have any problems," he explained. Despite stating readiness to face an increased threshold, Raja Juli highlighted the Constitutional Court's (MK) decision which declared the 4% parliamentary threshold conditionally constitutional for the 2029 election and subsequent elections. The MK also ordered changes to the norms and the magnitude of the threshold based on several requirements. Raja Juli opined that changes to the threshold need to consider ensuring that voters' voices are not lost without representation in the DPR. "The issue is the MK's decision, which clearly states that a more appropriate formulation is needed so that the people's votes are not wasted. People's votes are not in vain. There's already a figure, around 16 million votes that subsequently had no representation in the DPR with a 4% threshold. If it's 5%, how many do you think?" he said. Therefore, Raja Juli emphasized the importance of a fair and democratic formulation for the threshold. "So, I think a fair and democratic formulation is what's important. But for PSI, God willing, whatever the number, we are ready to fight in 2029," he concluded.
