Cambodia Conducts Voter Registration Training for 2027 Commune Council Elections

In Kampong Thom province, Cambodia, the Provincial Election Secretariat (L.Kh.B.) has organized a training course on voter registration and list verification in preparation for the upcoming 2027 commune council elections. The training, held on September 24th at the provincial secretariat's meeting hall, was attended by officials from various relevant ministries and agencies, as well as military personnel. Mr. Chea Sophon, Vice Chairman of the L.Kh.B., stated that according to election laws, the National Election Committee (NEC) is tasked with preparing and managing the process of voter registration and list verification for 2026, which will serve as the basis for the 2027 commune council elections (6th mandate). He noted that the voter registration and list verification, along with the official validation of the voter list for 2026, will run from October 7, 2026, to February 12, 2027. Specifically, the period for reviewing voter lists in communes across the country will last 55 days, from October 7 to November 30, 2026. The training session was specifically designed for L.Kh.B. officials, representatives of political parties, associations, and non-governmental organizations. Its aim is to ensure a common understanding of the legal framework for elections, the process of voter registration and list verification, the use of various forms, the packaging of materials and documents, and the procedures for providing identification documents to facilitate voter registration. This knowledge will serve as a foundation for the successful and lawful execution of the 2026 voter list review. Mr. Chea Sophon expressed his hope that the participants, particularly L.Kh.B. officials, would diligently focus on the training, bridging theory with practical application. He encouraged them to note key points and raise questions for further clarification from the instructors, enabling them to share this knowledge and conduct further training for officials at the commune and village levels effectively. This training is a significant step towards ensuring the smooth conduct of democratic election processes in Cambodia. Accurate and transparent voter lists are crucial, especially for local elections that directly impact the lives of residents. In the context of Cambodia's deepening ties with China, ensuring transparency and credibility in its domestic political processes is also a factor drawing international attention.
