Hanoi Proposes Support for Low-Income Residents to Replace Old Motorcycles

Hanoi, Vietnam – The Hanoi People's Committee has instructed the Department of Construction to develop a plan to support low-income residents in replacing old motorcycles and motorbikes that have been in use for many years and pose a high risk of pollution due to not meeting emission standards. Currently, Hanoi is home to over 8 million vehicles, including 1.1 million cars and 6.9 million motorbikes. An additional approximately 1.2 million vehicles from other provinces and cities circulate daily. The area within Ring Road 1 alone has about 600,000 motorbikes and 180,000 cars. A significant portion of these vehicles use fossil fuels, are outdated in technology, and have low emission standards, leading to high pollution levels. This initiative reflects Hanoi's efforts to address the growing environmental challenges and traffic congestion exacerbated by rapid urbanization and economic growth. While Vietnam's one-party system prioritizes economic development, the environmental impact of this growth is becoming increasingly apparent in urban centers, directly affecting citizens' quality of life. For low-income households, the cost of replacing older vehicles can be a significant financial burden, making the details of the proposed support program crucial.
