Grab Acquires Controlling Stake in Atome Financial, Deepens Fintech Push

MANILA, Philippines — Grab is accelerating its expansion into financial services by acquiring a 60% stake in Atome Financial, a Singapore-based "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) fintech firm operating in the Philippines and four other Southeast Asian markets, for $1.49 billion. Grab announced this on Tuesday. This strategic acquisition will significantly enhance Grab's financial service offerings within the Philippines. Grab already operates "GrabPay" in the country, competing with services like "GCash" and "Maya." The acquisition of Atome Financial further broadens the company's payment and financial services portfolio. Atome Financial operates in the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, particularly promoting BNPL services among younger demographics and digital natives as a payment method for online shopping and in physical stores. By leveraging Atome Financial's customer base and payment infrastructure, Grab is expected to promote financial inclusion and offer a wider range of financial products in the Philippines.
