Sole Survivor of Dong Nai Massacre Recovers from Critical Condition

Nguyen Viet Quang, 40, the sole survivor of a massacre in Binh Minh commune, Dong Nai province, has overcome the critical stage after undergoing surgery for multiple severe injuries. On September 4, Quang's health stabilized, though he remains fatigued. His wife, Ho Thi Mai, 36, their 11-year-old son, and 2-year-old daughter all died in the incident. Relatives have not yet informed Quang of his family's tragic loss. Quang's family had no prior acquaintance or conflict with the perpetrator, Nguyen Duc Anh, 21. Initial statements indicate that in the early hours of September 3, Anh, armed with a knife, went to the house of a young woman he had a past relationship with but could not gain entry. He then climbed onto the adjacent house of Quang and committed the crime. 'I begged, but he still attacked me' Quang recounted that on the night of the incident, his family went to bed early as usual. In the early morning, he was awakened by a loud noise from the neighbor's house and then heard sounds on the tin roof. When he went to the porch to inquire, a neighbor told him there was a stranger on the roof, prompting him to immediately return inside and lock the door. Upon checking the second floor, he discovered a young man already inside. He ran to the kitchen to grab a knife, but before he could do anything, the intruder lunged at him. 'Before I could do anything, he rushed in and attacked me wildly,' Quang recounted. A struggle ensued inside the house. Quang then called for his wife to open the door so he could escape and seek help. After running about 15 meters, he was caught by Anh and continued to be attacked until he collapsed on the road. 'I pleaded, I begged, but he kept slashing me,' Quang stated. 20 Units of Blood Transfused to Save the Victim According to a leader at Dong Nai General Hospital, Quang arrived in critical condition with severe blood loss and zero blood pressure. The most severe injury was to his left arm, with a severed artery, leaving the limb nearly detached. The hospital activated a Code Red, mobilizing a surgical team and transfusing 20 units of blood to save the patient. Quang has now passed the critical phase and is in recovery. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Loi, head of the Anesthesiology and Resuscitation Department, noted that besides the severe damage to his left arm, the patient also sustained injuries to his head, eyes, mouth, neck, chest, and abdomen, though less severe. 'When the patient was admitted, we thought it would be difficult to save him due to the severity of the wounds, but the team was determined to fight for his life,' Dr. Loi said. Investigators preliminarily determined that in the early morning, Nguyen Duc Anh, after consuming alcohol, went to the house of the young woman living next to Quang's family. Armed with a knife, he climbed onto the roof and pried open a skylight to attempt entry. Around 1:45 AM, the young woman's father heard a noise, turned on the light, and discovered Anh on the roof with a knife. He told Anh that his daughter and Anh had broken up and asked him to leave. However, Anh continued to pry open the skylight, declaring he would kill the entire family. Fearful, the father bolted all the doors and called the police. Anh then climbed over to Quang's house, opened the second-floor door, and entered with the intent of reaching the young woman's house. When Quang discovered him, Anh attacked and stabbed him. The suspect then bolted the gate and murdered Quang's wife and children. According to Binh Minh Commune Police, commune police arrived at the scene six minutes after receiving the report. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Quang lying on the road, with the house locked from the inside by the perpetrator. Police persuaded Anh to open the door and arrested him. On the afternoon of September 4, the bodies of the three victims, including Ms. Ho Thi Mai, were transported to their hometown in Nghe An province for burial.
