Vientiane Traffic Congestion Worsens Due to Multiple Factors
Vientiane, Laos, is experiencing severe traffic congestion due to a combination of malfunctioning traffic signals, a rapid increase in vehicles, and illegal parking. Authorities are accelerating response measures including increased police presence and infrastructure repairs.
Vientiane, the capital of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is grappling with persistent traffic congestion stemming from a confluence of factors. Colonel Sangkham Phommalath, Head of the Traffic Police Division under the Vientiane Capital Police Command, stated on July 14 that congestion has continued despite the school holiday period. The situation has been exacerbated by heavy rainfall, which has caused flooding at several locations and disrupted traffic signal systems. Vientiane has 68 signalized intersections, of which 39 are operating normally. However, 17 are out of service, and 12 are experiencing technical faults, including signals that flash on one side or display conflicting red and green lights simultaneously. Colonel Sangkham also highlighted the pressure on the city's road network from a rapid increase in vehicles, including electric motorcycles and three-wheelers. The operation of vehicles without proper licensing has also been noted as an issue. Furthermore, illegal roadside parking, coupled with insufficient parking facilities at shops and restaurants, has further obstructed traffic flow. Some motorists' disregard for traffic regulations also contributes to the congestion. To address the problem, the Traffic Police Division, in coordination with district traffic units, has deployed additional officers to manage traffic, particularly during peak hours.
