Cambodia Fuel Prices Surge Despite Government Support Measures

PHNOM PENH, Sept 11, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s retail fuel prices have risen sharply, with regular gasoline approaching 5,000 riel (US$1.19) per litre and diesel reaching 5,450 riel (US$1.35), despite continued government measures aimed at easing the impact on consumers, officials said Friday. The Ministry of Commerce said regular gasoline will increase to 4,800 riel per litre, up from 4,400 riel in the previous announcement, while diesel will rise from 5,150 riel to 5,450 riel. The new prices apply from 1 p.m. on September 11 through September 21. Authorities said the government continues to subsidize fuel by reducing retail prices by 6.5 U.S. cents per litre, with an additional one‑cent cut triggered when international gasoline prices exceed US$90 per barrel and diesel surpasses US$100. Officials added that tax measures remain in place to contain costs. Import duties and VAT on gasoline and diesel have been reduced to zero. The special tax on gasoline has been cut from 30 percent to 15 percent, while the diesel tax has been eliminated. VAT on gasoline has been lowered from 10 percent to 4 percent, while VAT on diesel has been cut from 10 percent to zero. The latest adjustment means consumers will continue to face higher pump prices even as the government maintains tax reductions and subsidies designed to cushion the impact of volatile global energy markets. Officials said the measures reflect efforts to balance fiscal stability with consumer protection amid rising international oil prices.
