Cambodia Launches Cancer Awareness: Don't Ignore These 7 Early Warning Signs
Cambodia is promoting early cancer detection and treatment awareness. The campaign urges people not to ignore seven early warning signs from the body, such as sudden weight loss, unusual bleeding, or lumps, and to seek medical attention if symptoms persist for over two to three weeks.
Cambodia is actively promoting awareness about the critical importance of early cancer detection and treatment. Cancer is one of the most aggressive diseases, but its severity can be mitigated if identified and treated in its "early stages." Our bodies are intelligent machines; when abnormal cells begin to grow, they consistently send out warning signals. If you or someone close to you experiences any of the following seven unusual signs, and they do not subside within two to three weeks, it is crucial not to ignore them: 1. Unexplained Rapid Weight Loss: If your weight suddenly drops significantly (4 to 5 kilograms or more in a short period) without dieting or exercising, this is a common warning sign for various cancers, particularly pancreatic, stomach, lung, or blood cancers. Cancer cells can be consuming your body's energy and nutrients. 2. Abnormal Bleeding from Various Orifices: Unexplained bleeding is an emergency sign. Coughing up blood may indicate lung cancer. Blood in the stool (bright red or black) can signal colorectal cancer. Irregular vaginal bleeding (after intercourse or post-menopause) might be a sign of cervical or uterine cancer. Blood in the urine could indicate bladder or kidney cancer. 3. Lumps or Hard Swelling Under the Skin: Regularly examine your body. If you find unusual lumps, swelling, or hardness in areas like the breast, armpit, groin, neck, or elsewhere, especially if they are painless and growing, they could be malignant tumors. Regular breast self-examinations can aid in early detection of breast cancer. 4. Chronic Cough or Hoarseness: A typical cough from a cold usually resolves within one to two weeks. However, if you have a persistent dry cough lasting over a month, shortness of breath, or hoarseness that doesn't improve (without shouting or excessive voice use), it could be a sign of lung or throat cancer. 5. Changes in Bowel or Bladder Habits: If your digestive or urinary system suddenly changes significantly, such as alternating constipation and chronic diarrhea, narrower stools than usual, or a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying. For urinary issues, frequent urination, painful urination, or difficulty urinating (especially in older men) warrants investigation for colorectal or prostate cancer. 6. Sores That Do Not Heal: The human body has a rapid self-repair capability. However, if you have sores on your skin, in your mouth, on your tongue, or on your genitals that have not healed after months of treatment or topical application, it could be a sign of skin cancer or oral cancer. 7. Changes in Moles or Skin Irregularities: If an old mole or a newly developed one changes in appearance, such as asymmetry, irregular borders, color variations (very dark, red, or mixed colors), itching, bleeding, or rapid growth, these are clear warning signs of skin cancer (Melanoma). These seven signs do not automatically mean you have cancer; they can be caused by other common illnesses. However, the key difference between common illnesses and cancer lies in "time." If these symptoms persist for more than two weeks without improvement, it is time to visit a hospital for blood tests or a biopsy. Source: Koh Santepheap Khmer
