Phnom Penh's Daun Penh District Intensifies Crackdown on Sidewalk Encroachment and Illegal Parking

In Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, particularly in the central Daun Penh district, which serves as the political and economic heart, measures to address issues related to public order, such as sidewalk encroachment and illegal parking, are being intensified. This initiative follows directives from Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng, who has mandated all 14 districts, including Daun Penh, to focus on maintaining order in public spaces. During the 28th ordinary meeting of the 4th mandate of the Daun Penh District Council, held on September 25, 2026, District Governor Kia Khem emphasized the ongoing efforts to tackle these problems. According to the Governor, some business owners have been illegally occupying public sidewalks and roads for parking and commercial activities. To rectify this, authorities are implementing a policy to reserve one-third of public sidewalks for pedestrian use, aiming to facilitate smooth movement for citizens and enhance the local aesthetic. Furthermore, the District Governor appealed to local residents for proper waste disposal. As the rainy season has begun with increased rainfall, cooperation from residents is deemed essential for maintaining sanitary conditions and improving the overall appearance of the district. This effort is seen as part of Phnom Penh's continuous endeavor to enhance its appeal as an international tourist destination and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
