Ho Chi Minh City Aims for 255km of Urban Railway by 2030
Ho Chi Minh City has reported on the progress of its urban railway network development, aiming to complete 255km by 2030. Key projects, particularly Metro Line 1 and 2, are being prioritized to address traffic congestion and support economic growth amid rapid urbanization.
On July 30, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction reported to the City's Urban Railway Network Development Steering Committee on the progress of railway projects and key tasks for the latter half of 2026. The city aims to complete a total of 255km of urban railway network by 2030, with several projects currently underway. Notably, the construction of Metro Line 1, connecting Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien, and Metro Line 2, connecting Ben Thanh to Tham Luong, are central to the plan. To encourage public adoption, Metro Line 1 offered free rides for citizens on July 2. Furthermore, the construction of diaphragm walls for underground stations on Metro Line 2 is set to commence soon, and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) areas are being developed in five zones along the line. Additionally, the city is working on installing covered walkways to facilitate seamless connections between metro and bus services, and is collaborating on research for integrated system operation and maintenance of metro lines. These infrastructure investments are considered essential for the sustainable growth and improved urban functionality of Ho Chi Minh City, a key economic hub in Vietnam.
